I recently heard that coconut oil may delay the progression of Alzheimers' disease:
http://www.impactlab.net/2011/01/31/coconut-oil-shown-to-reverse-the-effects-of-alzheimers/ Because coconut oil has saturated fat, it is of course not so good for your heart, but it is possible that it is good for your brain. This is because coconut oil has a large concentration of a fat called medium chain triglycerides (MCT). It is not fully clear why MCT has an effect, but some studies suggest that it liberates omega-3 fatty acids in the body and transports it to the brain. In addition it increases phospholipid levels in the brain, which is related to healthy cognitive functioning (phospholipids contain choline, which is the precursor molecule for Acetylcholine).
