Research has shown a connection between the length of the ring finger and testosterone. Men tend to have a longer ring finger in relation to the index finger in comparison with women. This is because sex hormones affect fetus development. Interestingly enough, research suggest that men with longer ring fingers in relation to the index finger tend to have more masculine traits. For instance, such men are more competitive (for instance, in regards to sports) and risk taking (for instance, in regards to trading). So in this case, it seems that length matters...

Really interesting post Mr. Hansson. However, I see this in a slightly different way. As I understand it, testosterone affects behavior, and ring finger growth. If this is the case, why would there be a connection between the ring finger size and competitive behavior? The cause of the ring finger size and competitiveness is testosterone level, so wouldn't that make ring finger size and competitiveness merely correlational?

Of course, you are right Book, I should have made this clearer. There is only a correlation between the length of the ring finger and level of competitiveness. The factor contributing to competitiveness is of course testosterone, which also affects the length of the ring finger. Thanks for commenting on my blog!

Thanks for the reply Mr. Hansson! Just so you know, I still check and read your blogs almost daily, but from time to time I will try to give you short comments like this! I had my first cognitive psychology class at college today, and it seems like i'm the only freshman in class.

Just thought i should let you know this. I still read you blog weekly. I just don't have the time post back any comments because I've been really busy with debate practices. I recently joined the Chula's debate team and it's highly competitive, yet very productive. SO, your blog has not been forgotten yet Mr. Hansson. Please keep writing it :)
